Evolution of TikTok

Evolution of TikTok

A billion people are now using TikTok worldwide every month – around three times the global audience Spotify pulls in.

TikTok is not just a dumping ground for sophomoric videos. Instead, it’s expanding, which is good news for the music industry. A case in point is PinPantheress, who is a DIY pop artist from Bath, United Kingdom. She did so well; she signed with Electra Music Group and Parlophone, both within Warner Music Group. She uses TikTok to get her music out to her fans and also A&R her ideas.

I post a snippet of [a track], and if people like it I’ll go and record a full version, she recently told the BBC, adding: The algorithm is crazy on TikTok, you can post a video and you can have zero followers, and it can do well.

Of course, record labels are also paying attention. In 2020, approximately  70 acts signed contracts after being found on TikTok.

The practice of exclusive artist releases on individual streaming platforms, thought dead, is alive and well, thanks to Dr. TikTok. Before the official release dates, David Guetta, Coldplay, and BTS successfully used TikTok to premiere new music.

Next on the horizon is the live-stream concert on TikTok. K-Pop stars BTS, Twice, and Super Junior held a live-stream show in Korea on the platform.

Users had to register membership with ‘Lotte Duty Free,’ the headline sponsor. After registering, they received an entry code. Nearly 600,000 viewers tuned in at $20 to $30.

Data suggests TikTok subscribers’ per user watch time is surpassing that of Youtube among some demographics.

TikTok is beta testing a direct upload service with the requisite tools to further its venture into the music world. The program is called SoundOn, and it’s for the independent artists who want to grow on the platform.

For the Global Head of Music at TikTok, Ole Obermann, the mission is to bring artists and their fanbases together in a more profound connection that other platforms can’t provide. Obermann told Music Business World,

TikTok is a platform that is about music engagement, not consumption. It’s a new form of fandom. We’re now at the point where a trending song on TikTok will achieve billions of views and many millions of creations in a single month.

Paul van Dyk ALDA Arbitration

Paul van Dyk ALDA arbitration ends. Paul receives $12,588,643.45 for medical expenses and lost profits. The details of the award include

$2,000,000 for future medical expenses
$1,200,000 for lost profits for the years 2016 and 2017
$2,475,000 for losses in the next ten years
$5,500,000 for undisclosed damages

The Accident

The incident occurred at during Paul van Dyk’s set at ‘State of Trance’ 750 in February 2016 in Utrecht, Netherlands. During his performance, Paul stepped on to the table area, which is typical for DJs. As he walked, something collapsed, and he fell to the ground. View the incident below.

Paul suffered brain and spinal injuries. During the subsequent three months, Paul had surgery and physical therapy. Paul is healthy and back to normal, but with a changed perspective.

I was in a coma, and when I woke up, I wasn’t able to do anything. So whatever I do now is to me, a miracle, a gift. Every sound on from then on is 1,000 percent how I want it to be. I don’t want to waste my talent, or call it whatever, on somebody else’s idea of how my music should be. I am closer to myself and my music, than I have ever been, simply because there is a certain element of myself that sees life very differently.

The Arbitration

The event organizer was ALDA Events B.V. They were responsible for all aspects of the stage, including its safety. During arbitration, ALDA admitted the table area where Paul from was not designed to be stood on. Furthermore, ALDA did not advise Paul of this fact verbally or in writing. The Arbitration Hearing Officer decided ALDA was at fault because the stage was unsafe and gave no notice or warning to Paul or his agents.

Groove Cruise Cabo 2018

Groove Cruise Cabo 2018 finished its historical thirtieth voyage in mid-October. Dubbed a ‘logistical marvel,’ the team at Whet Travel faced a hurricane, which threatened the Norwegian Pearl and her passengers. Facing impending doom, they made the critical decision to avoid Cabo and certain death. Choosing life and happiness, the ocean liner steered her way to Ensenada, a picturesque destination in the Baja California peninsula of Mexico. Duke Dumont treated the GCFam to an impromptu rave at Papas & Beer, which sent them into a frenzy.

Despite the trials and tribulations, many aboard said Groove Cruise Cabo 2018 was their favorite experience on the ocean. The unexpected change in location turned out to be a blessing in disguise. The non-profit Whet Foundation seized the opportunity to provide the community’s children with necessary school supplies. The team of volunteers, the Whet Foundation, and Kid Wiseman created a street art project.

The unofficial captain of the cruise, Green Velvet, gave two memorable performances. His first was an immersive set by the pool. His second was a closing set of classics. Green Velvet also wore several costumes as he partied with attendees at the eight parties. Guests were treated to Spain’s tech-house legendary duo of Chus & Ceballos as well.

Additional opportunities to hang out with artists included a Kung Fu class with the one and only Laidback Luke, a ping-pong tournament with Shiba San, and much more. Other Groove Cruise highlights included sets from fan favorites like Benny Benassi, MK, Cosmic Gate, and Felix Cartal.

You can see some of the fun people had by checking out the gallery page.

Groove Cruise Miami 2019

Next up for the Whet Travel team is Groove Cruise Miami 2019, which will take place January 10th-14th. The event will mark the 15th anniversary of Groove Cruise and will feature performances from Kaskade, Aly & Fila, Hot Since 82, Markus Schulz, MK, Simon Patterson, and many more stars of the electronic music world.

Wees Michael Mustapha Evidence

Wees Michael Mustapha Evidence featuring Lokka Vox is our progressive house track of the month for June 2018 released on Chroma Records.

American-Lebanese house music DJ producer Wissam Majed, also known as WEES, contracted Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), commonly known as ‘Lou Gehrig’s Disease’ in early 2014. Wees partnered with DJ Michael Mustapha in 2015, and they produced a track for ALS awareness. That track was ‘Lifeline.’ They released it on John Dahlbeck’s private label, Mutants Records. All proceeds from ‘Lifeline’ go to Hope For ALS.

ALS is a devastating disease that can affect anyone literally. Your body falls apart, and your mind remains sharp. There are no approved effective treatments. We need to put an end to this cruel disease, and hopenowforals.org will lead the way. What keeps me going is the love of my family, friends and dance music.

– Wissam Majed

‘Evidence’ is the follow-up single to ‘Lifeline’ by Wees and Michael Mustapha. Lokka Vox’s sultry vocals tell the story of love’s betrayal. The uplifting melody counters this sad, but too familiar tale. In the end, this song is about emotional suffering and emerging a stronger person.

Anki Delport, also known as Lokka Vox, is a singer, songwriter, and performer from Pretoria, South Africa, but living in New Orleans, Louisiana. She has collaborated with the likes of Borgeous, Ashley Wallbridge, Antillas, Jourdan Bordes, Blood Groove & Kikis, Mintz, Artisan, Dankann, Hazem Beltagui, Newik, Fabio XB, Jaco & Ease, Yves De La Croix, The C.D.S, Almond, Harmonix, Tomac, Rake, Nick Winth, Bassfinder, Rubix, Karim Haas, Paul Sawyer, Kenneth Thomas, Aeonlights, Aerro, John Evans, Craiv, Blue Warrior, I.Y.F.F.E, MKJ & Otter Berry, Straight Up, Alex Leavon, and Disco’s Over.

Oddest Goddess has a smooth and magnificent groove. It is a successful fusion of electro, trap, and pop. The melodic softness tempers Ayah’s strong vocals. Electro house makes up the energetic drop.

Otto is best known for his collaborations with Thomas Newson and Melanie Fontana on ‘Bells At Midnight’ and ManyFew and Melanie Fontana on ‘Don’t Miss You.’ ‘Don’t Miss You’ peaked on iTunes Italy at number seven and streamed 2.6 million times on Spotify. Titans of the industry Hardwell, Nicky Romero, W&W, Blasterjaxx, and Don Diablo have incorporated Otto’s music in either their DJ sets or radio shows.
