Melancholic Techno Artist Charlotte de Witte

Charlotte de Witte, techno

Melancholic Techno Artist Charlotte de Witte

Taking the world by storm is Belgian melancholic techno artist Charlotte de Witte. She has a vision for her music and models her career to bring that idea to life. Her work ethic has her torching dance floors across Europe every weekend with her aggressive techno sets.

After conquering Europe, Asia, and Canada, the rest of the world is calling. Next stop for Charlotte: World Domination! She is that rare breed of DJ who can perform on the most significant stages as well as the sweatiest underground raves.

With all of her accomplishments thus far, her heart belongs to the underground techno scene and her home of Belgium. She is humble and maintains a sense of stewardship if you will, with up-and-coming talent. She has a Saturday night radio show, ‘Playground Charlotte de Witte’ on Studio Brussel. Studio Brussel is Belgium’s leading radio station. She has a residency, ‘KNTXT’ at Fuse nightclub, which has been a staple in the Brussels techno since 1994. She uses these opportunities to showcase music from lesser-known artists.

Best Song #1 – Red Bull Elektropedia Awards 2015
Tomorrow In The Papers #2 – Red Bull Elektropedia Awards 2014

Influences

Her hometown of Ghent, Belgium, had an immense impact on her life. The underground nightlife and quality festivals enticed her to become a DJ. She realized the importance only recently of growing up in Belgium. She found New Beat and rave culture influenced her later music.

Charlotte has an affinity for melancholic music. She enjoys tracks with breakable, fragile voices. Her favorite artists for such music are James Blake, Bob Moses, Dillon, Lera Lynn, Julia Stone, and Rhye. Someday, she hopes to collaborate with them as she feels her techno would be a great match.

The Producer

Charlotte started producing music about five years ago. After DJ’ing for some time, she found a need to understand the music. She wanted to know what made a track work, so she delved deep within herself to find the essence of music. Producing gave her another vehicle to reveal herself through melancholy techno.

Making music really gives me a chance to tap into the more emotional side of electronic music that I love. Music that has that melancholic side to it, I just find it so much more interesting, whether DJ’ing, producing or just listening myself at home.

Melancholic Techno

Charlotte chooses the names of her tracks by two methods. She merely uses the word most oft-repeated or waits for the emotion the song elicits. For instance, the title track, ‘Weltschmerz,’ of her first EP is a German word. The German author, Jean-Paul, defined Weltschmerz as, ‘the feeling experienced by someone who believes that physical reality can never satisfy the demands of the mind.’ Charlotte was overcome by melancholy and appropriately named the track.

The inspiration for naming her song ‘Brussels’ was a conversation she overheard. While at a noodle bar in the city, she heard a woman talk about her boyfriend going on a night out. The woman said,

And I looked into his eyes, and he was gone. I didn’t know what to do.

The words imprinted on her mind and they fit this song.

This remix got released last week and i must say i’m pleasantly surprised and very proud to see it has jumped to the Beatport Techno Top 10. Many thanks for this! ????????

UK PROGRESSIVE DJ PRODUCER ASHLEY WALLBRIDGE

UK Progressive DJ Producer Ashley Wallbridge

January 8, 2018 by PrimeEV
Ashley Wallbridge, EDM

UK Progressive DJ Producer Ashley Wallbridge

UK Progressive DJ Producer Ashley Wallbridge, born February 28, 1988, is from Stoke-On-Trent in Central England. His birthplace is world-renowned for its pottery industry.

He began his musical journey in 2008 as not only a DJ Producer but also as a ghost producer. Most likely, if you aren’t familiar with his tracks, you are familiar with music he’s ghost-produced.

Ashley has an innate passion for his music. This desire is amplified when he’s in front of a crowded dancefloor or festival. Ashley also finds motivation from his many downloads and his peers around him. His studio allows him autonomy to dig deep into his seemingly boundless well of creativity to make the music he loves. The music, in turn, led to remix requests from luminaries such as Avicii, Havana Brown, Krewella, Gareth Emery, and Armin van Buuren.

He released several tracks on Andy Moor’s AVA Recordings label between 2008 and 2013. He joined Andy at two of his official WMC AVA Takeover events in 2011 and 2012.

His 2012 debut album ‘The Inner Me’ reached #5 on the iTunes USA charts, #9 in Canada, and #12 in the UK. Ashley continued to feed off the vibe of the crowd and cater to their emotional need. This uncanny ability to play to the crowd extended everywhere from Europe to the USA. His on-point productions and larger-than-life dedication to his craft have earned him spots at Los Angeles’ Exchange, Omnia in San Diego, Ministry of Sound in London, Privilege Ibiza, and a residency at famous Las Vegas hotspot Marquee. Taking it up a score at Creamfields Australia, Global Gathering in the UK, and Sunset Music, the Wallbridge brand ignites demand across the globe.

Ghost Producer

Ashley spent many years ghost-producing for other producers. He had pragmatic reasons for doing it in the first place. He became disgusted with the practice after seeing those producers make a small fortune from his work and not give him any credit. What set him off was certain producers taking credit for his work and defrauding the fans. Some even had the gall to ask him to do it again. If not for the non-disclosure agreements and lack of credit, he would have continued.

He teamed up with Gareth Emery, and they created the project, CVNT5, the brainchild of a drunken stupor.

“a satire of a lot of the clichés in dance culture today. We’re laughing as much at ourselves as other people, a lot of the content for the video comes from stuff Gaz and I have actually done ourselves (maybe not the pissing in the fans’ faces part).”

Ashley signed with Armada Music in 2016 and launched dramatic productions such as ‘Amnesia,’ ‘Goa,’ ‘Undiscovered, featuring KARRA, and ‘Naughts & Crosses.’ It’s clear that the waves Ashley Wallbridge makes are getting bigger every time he pushes the envelope of his sound. And it is that kind of mindset that allows him to ride those waves like the scene leader he is.

Dance Music, The Future

Ashley has an interesting opinion about the pop crossover world.

I think it’s great, seeing the kids out at a festival when ten years ago it would have been a rock concert. Pop music comes in cycles, and when it’s chewed up and spat out dance it will move on to something else! The heartbeat of dance music will always be in the underground; it’s where it began, and it’s why it will never go away no matter what happens in the pop crossover world.

The underground, real fans, acts as an anchor for the music. The bastardization of dance music will die when pop has used dance music for what it can and move on to co-opt something else. On the other side, will be a resurgence of trance and a truer progressive. He expects more melody and chill.

I’m not sure about the next 10 years… there’s probably some 12-year-old kid sitting in his bedroom on Ableton right now creating a new genre none of us have heard of yet! But certainly, in the near future, there will be a return to melody in the mainstream; as big room dies there’ll be more melodic, chill, really musical stuff. In the club scene, progressive will come back in a truer form, and a lot of people are talking about a trance resurgence. The cool underground will keep enjoying whatever the latest social media hating hipster is putting out.

Ubiquitous DJ Visionary Endo

Ubiquitous DJ Visionary Endo

deep house, DJ Endo

Ubiquitous DJ Visionary Endo

Ubiquitous DJ Visionary Endo; there are those individuals who are early adopters, then there are those who are innovators. Mike Henderson aka ENDO falls into the latter category. A ubiquitous figure in electronic dance music for going on two decades, ENDO is a musician, a DJ, a teacher, an inventor, and a visionary.

Inspirations

Beats have been driving ENDO as early as the first year of his life when he began drumming. Entering into his double digits, ENDO joined his school’s marching band and orchestra. As a teen, he stepped into the drummer’s seat in a number of hardcore and punk bands, absorbing the influences of grunge, punk, and hardcore sounds. That is until he decided to travel to Woodstock in 1999. Here, a 17-year-old ENDO experienced DJs for the first time. In an airplane hangar with mental visuals, his life took a sharp turn after hearing Moby, Fatboy Slim, and the Chemical Brothers. Upon his return to his home state of Vermont, ENDO traded his drumsticks for turntables, and locked himself away for the next couple of years, perfecting the art of DJing.

“It was an addiction and an obsession,” says ENDO. “It helped that I was a drummer and that I had a mathematical background. Using both of these and having a knowledge of song structure, I am able to calculate when I should stop and start tracks, using my mappings to navigate mathematically so they come in and out of the mix exactly when I want them to.”

Part of what ENDO calls his DJ “Jedi training,” was marathon, all vinyl, graveyard shifts on 90.1 WRUV FM in Burlington, Vermont called “Graveyard Breaks.” Here, he learned how to program sets, segueing into a weekly, three-hour daytime show on the station, “Hit The Breaks.” Word of ENDO’s skills started spreading. Soon he was getting booked at raves around New England.

A progression from his drumming background, ENDO’s instinctual gravitation started with breaks. From tear-out breaks to melodic breaks to clubby breaks, he can find a style that will fit the mood of the event. After a decade of breaks, ENDO has shifted into more house-based sounds. Similar to what he was doing with breaks, he seamlessly adjusts his sets: For dark, minimal and trippy after-hours vibes he will play techno or bass-driven tech-house, on a beach—where you’ll find him more often than not—he’ll bring out happier beats, but he could just as easily drop deep house, bassline house, G-house or funky house.

“My sets are all harmonic progression. I program my iTunes with smart playlists to give me compatible songs. Every song is in key, or intentionally out of key, modulated harmonically,” ENDO says. “You can subliminally play with people’s emotions with harmonic mixing. There’s all this tension, then you give them the harmonic release. You have to tell your story. You have to find the songs that speak to you. That’s the art form, the intuition. A good DJ has good intuition.”

ENDO has unleashed his patented brand of harmonic mixing at events across the globe: Pacha, Marquee, and Cielo in New York, Sound in Los Angeles, Guvernment and Coda in Toronto, Stereo in Montreal, The Globe in Los Angeles, Spybar in Chicago, Heart in Miami, Sands in Ibiza, Club Vertigo in Costa Rica, as well as BPM Festival in Mexico and Electric Festival in Aruba. He has played alongside John Digweed, DJ Craze, Roc Raida, Victor Calderone, Danny Tenaglia, Carl Cox, Chus & Ceballos, Eric Prydz, to name just a few, and perhaps given them a much-sought-after technical tip or two in the process.

Technical Superiority

ENDO’s technical know-how is an inherent gift. Once he knew electronic music was his future, he left his University Of Vermont education as a math major and enrolled at the prestigious Berklee College Of Music as an electronic music production and music synthesis major with drum set as his principal instrument. After this, ENDO had a radio show at Massachusetts Institute Of Technology’s college station, 88.9 WMBR FM called “Algorthythms.” Here, he was breaking ground both musically and technologically with the latest DJ gear. For his final project at Berklee ENDO put together an exhaustive DVD tutorial for Native Instruments’ Traktor and in the process, created a new harmonic mixing system for DJs working with vinyl.

“When we were playing vinyl, you had to write the key of the record on the sleeves,” ENDO explains. “I was doing that for every record. The problem is, when you speed a record up or down, it’s in a different key. How do I mix harmonically if I’m switching speeds all the time? I keyed every record in the same BPM so no matter what speed the turntables were, you knew the keys were matching.”

ENDO contributed to Mixed In Key’s algorithm by sending them 200 tracks a month that he played, figured out the key to manually on the piano and delivering his results. His contributions helped improve the accuracy of the algorithm.

From here ENDO went on to work with Native Instruments as a DJ product specialist and artist trainer. He has taught the ropes to everyone: Dubfire, Sasha, Steve Lawler, Nic Fanciulli, DJ Skribble, Josh Wink, Dennis Ferrer, DJ Dan, DJ Craze, LMFAO, Diplo, Lee Burridge, MSTRKRFT, Carl Cox, David Morales, Victor Calderone, Felix Da Housecat, among many others.

The Instructor

ENDO also has numerous on-line tutorials on Dubspot, which to date have over four million views, and from which he gets positive feedback from regularly. These include his DJ tutorials on Traktor—including the first ever on-line DJ course, “Digital DJing With Traktor,” with DJ Shiftee. As the first person to be known for figuring out how to sync Ableton and Traktor as well as Ableton and Maschine, ENDO evolved DJing for both Native Instruments programs, and has detailed Dubspot videos—the first of their kind—on these DJing methods.

Furthermore, ENDO created a revolutionary Maschine mapping for Traktor. After having the most downloaded mapping system, he set up MIDI Monsters, where he presents his evolutionary mappings as he creates them.

Disruptive Booking Agency

As is ENDO’s way, he sees issues where others aren’t aware of them, and sets about fixing those, creating a smooth terrain for creativity. Enter his latest venture, the booking app, AGNT. Aimed at DJs and promoters, the handy platform came about after ENDO’s extensive tour managing experience for the likes of Sasha, Nicole Moudaber, Dubfire, Sharam, Pete Tong, among others. Geared toward simplifying the process of booking, the barrage of negotiation e-mails are taken out of the equation with the app having all the information built in. From availability to fees, timeslots to payment, press pack to music, AGNT is all-inclusive. The app also allows DJs to bid for gigs, promoters to find the best DJs in their genre, and all users to rate each other.

“We initially made the app for DJs who don’t have an agent,” says ENDO of AGNT which he developed with Edmonton promoter, Viet Nguyen. Months prior to its launch date the app has 4,000 users signed up, and counting. “Agents don’t want to represent an artist who is making $200 a night. It’s not worth it. We’re giving them the chance to have representation and protection from getting screwed over. Also, there are a lot of DJs I look up to who got pushed out by agents and not getting gigs. AGNT is going to help revive their careers. And now, we have a lot of big DJs coming to us saying, ‘We want to use this.’

He continues, “With the rating system, everybody is going to be accountable. It will hopefully solve the problem of not talented DJs getting bookings and help good DJs rise to the top.”

US EDM Duo Norin and Rad

US EDM Duo Norin and Rad, Bruce Karlsson (Norin), and Nick Sember (Rad) were named after the original name of the comic book character, Silver Surfer, Norrin Radd. Tipped as stars of the future by Above & Beyond, Bruce and Nick have lived up to that billing and more, releasing numerous smash hits that have found their way into DJ sets around the world.

Since their breakthrough smash hit “Bloom,” the California upstarts produced the most futuristic trance-influenced grooves and progressive EDM around with a string of Anjunabeats anthems such as “Zion,” “DeVas,” “Pistol Whip” and “Five Finger Death Punch.” By 2013, their production output varied from the rave-influenced progressive house riot that is “Bird Is The Word” and techno-edged “Thunder Cat” to their recent release “Prototype,” produced alongside their brother-from-another-mother Andrew Bayer under their collaborative ‘Artificial’ moniker.

The duo found time to remix the soundtrack from the world’s most prestigious video games franchise, Halo 4, as well as “The Way You Are” by Australian outfit Peking Duk and the legendary “Air For Life” by Above & Beyond and Andy Moor. They joined Andy for his AVA Takeover at WMC 2012, along with tyDi, Marcus Schossow, Boom Jinx, Joseph Areas, and Betsie Larkin.

As full of energy as their music, the duo’s unique approach and fast-cutting DJ style earned them rightful reputations as party starters of the highest order. In 2013, these two SoCal boys played some of Australia’s biggest arenas with Above & Beyond, toured with Mat Zo on his Damage Control bus tour and rocked legendary spots around the world, from New York’s Roseland Ballroom to India’s Jayamahal Palace, to Amnesia Ibiza. On the festival circuit, they conquered the stages of Miami’s Ultra, EDC Las Vegas, Electric Zoo, Tomorrowland, TomorrowWorld, and Creamfields in England, Argentina, and Peru.

On November 7, 2014, Nick Sember (Rad) posted on Facebook that Bruce Karlsson (Norin) had indeed left Norin & Rad. Nick continued Norin & Rad himself along with his self-titled solo project and has released tracks under Anjunabeats. Karlsson joined Kevin Wild and Elias Ghosn and formed Bad Royale.

Swedish EDM DJ Producer Marcus Schossow

Swedish EDM DJ Producer Marcus Schossow was born in Helsingborg, Sweden on October 28, 1985. His aliases include 1985, Oliver Englafjord, Progresia, Sokaya, Sunglider, and Tone Diary. He and his alter egos have been making music since he was five years old!

The Disruption of EDM 2007

Marcus released ‘Mr. White’ on Coldharbour Recordings Red in 2007. ‘Mr. White’ was a fusion of futuristic techno, filthy house, and trance. Its sound was intended to reinvent electronic dance music. It automatically became appealing to a whole host of DJs and music fans alike. Marcus was part of a hot, new, elite set of young DJs and producers with dance floors around the world clamoring for his infectious presence and prodigious mixing.

Progresia and Tone Diary established the ‘Schossow Sound’ while his work with fellow producer Thomas Sagstad has seen Tiesto, Axwell, and Steve Lawler snapping up tracks like ‘Hypnotizer’ and ‘Crepusculo.’ World-renowned label Spinnin’ Records gave Marcus their full backing when they signed him after his 22nd birthday. This signing made him their youngest to date.

At only 22, Marcus became a force in the dance music realm. Further support came from the A-list of DJ Producers including Pete Tong, Armin Van Buuren, Steve Angelo, and Sander van Doorn. These endorsements underlined Marcus’s increasing influence in the world of dance.

With Tone Diary, Marcus’ acclaimed radio show; the sound of Schossow travels even further. Setting the airwaves ablaze, he reaches those not lucky enough to have caught him live yet and reminds those who have of why they’ll have to check him out again!

And it’s not just his ability as a producer that screams ‘watch this person.’ Schossow is in demand around the world! He’s spun in major cities in the United States such as Los Angeles and Miami. He joined Andy Moor for his WMC 2010 event, Andy Moor and Friends. He’s in constant demand across Europe, the Far East and beyond are all calling out for gaps in his diary. In the short time, Marcus has been around; he’s already clocked up some of the biggest gigs in the calendar: Dance Valley, Godskitchen, Sunrise Festival, Escape Into the Park, Zurich’s Street Parade and the Colours Festival are just some!

Marcus possesses a résumé packed to the brim with releases on major labels. They include Size Records, Axtone Records, Revealed Recordings, Big Beat (Atlantic Records), and Spinnin’ Records. He also injected new life into his Code Red imprint with the banger, ‘Rumble.’ Marcus also serves as an outstanding mentor to young artists. He uses his status as a veteran in the scene when working along names like Corey James, NEW_ID and more.

Code Red Music

If you want to do something good, you have to do it yourself.

It was that belief that led Marcus Schossow to begin the Code Red Music project in 2015. The basic concept is to find, recruit, and mentor talented artists. The label’s core values as both an institution and record company were quickly acclaimed by many.

In Marcus’s words,

we wanted to create a place where our musical dreams can run wild

A core value of this belief is to

speak to each other daily, seeking to help and assist wherever possible

Not in the form of a constitution or set of rules, but in creative freedom.

Code Red Music’s focus is the musical journey and experience. Charts are valued just as much as discovery. At the core of this mission is interaction. Through the shared vision of Marcus, the artists, and their fans, they aspire to expand the quest for musical freedom and friendship.

Friendship is an important construct, and this involves everyone. Through interviews, tutorials and feedback sessions, the Code Red team wants to hear everyone’s thoughts and help improve the music. They want everyone to become part of this shared belief, and

have the options to create what we want to do, without anyone telling us how

German Scottish Trance Producer Andy Duguid

Andy Duguid, Trance

German Scottish Trance Producer Andy Duguid

German Scottish Trance Producer Andy Duguid was born on November 16, 1982, in Gutersloh, Germany. His hometown is New Pitsligo, a small village in Aberdeen, Scotland. His aliases include Reeves, Corsie, and Emilio Fernandez.

Childhood Musician To Stardom

I am a child of the 80’s, I was born in Gutersloh, Germany, although my parents relocated to England very soon after. I remember being drawn and influenced by music from a very early age, not least Jean Michel Jarre, so when my parents bought me a keyboard, the circle became complete. I remember spending hours practicing, first teaching myself the musical basics and then developing an obsession and desire to create weird and wonderful sounds. Nothing in the house was safe; everyday objects were all fair game; I even made a Xylophone out of a water bottle!

Young Andy started to play keyboards and piano when he was ten years old. By the time he was fourteen, he had produced music. In the following ten years of learning and experimenting, Andy released his first track, ‘Hypocrisy’ in 2006 on Tiesto’s Black Hole Recordings. ‘Hypocrisy’ reached number 5 on the Dutch Dance Charts and was popular with trance titans Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk. His next single, ‘Don’t Belong,’ was also very well received and featured on ‘In Search of Sunrise 6: Ibiza.’ Andy went on to become a frequent remixer for some of the most prolific artists in trance and progressive such as Tiësto, Johan Gielen, Phynn, Filo & Peri, Richard Durand and Mr. Sam.

In October 2007 Black Hole Recordings requested an album from Andy. Andy enlisted fellow Black Hole Recordings artists Julie Thompson, Esmaye, Mr. Sam, and Solarstone, as well as his longtime friend vocalist Leah. The resulting album ‘Believe’ released in 2008 to critical acclaim. The first release ‘Wasted’ featuring the vocals of Leah became a signature sound.

Personal Tragedies Came in 3s

Andy’s father passed away prematurely in 2005. This personal suffering, however, had an unexpected effect;

something snapped inside me. I knew I had to seize the – albeit sad – opportunity and go for it, so I quit the nine-to-five and focused on music full time.

Ninety days after his father’s passing is when Andy signed with Dutch giant Tiesto’s Black Hole Recordings. The next twelve months saw Andy’s career skyrocket.

The dream was interrupted by a nightmare when Andy learned of his brother’s diagnosis of terminal cancer. Andy confirmed he wrote the last track ‘White Sands’ with his brother. He told VH1 India

This track means so much. You can lose pictures or videos of your loved ones but this is something that will be around forever, and it makes me very proud of my brother.

Andy’s brother passed away two days after the release of his first album, ‘Believe.’

But so proud he managed to live long enough to see the release of my first album, even if it was by two days.

Olivia Downie

Andy’s friends, Steven and Lauren Downie had a daughter, Olivia. Olivia received a diagnosis of Neuroblastoma was she was just four years old. For the next three years, Olivia suffered unimaginable agony. Her parents traveled with her to Mexico’s Hope 4 Cancer Institute for treatment but ended up stranded. After news reached Scotland, the public raised 150,000 pounds for air ambulance transport back to Scotland. Olivia returned to Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital where she passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 29, 2012. She was 7 years old.

Olivia was the inspiration for ‘7Even,’ a collaboration between Andy and Jaren. ‘7Even’ was released on October 14, 2013, on Andy’s second album, ‘On The Edge.’ He announced all of his royalties from the track were to be donated to cancer research in Olivia’s name.

The DJ

Known as one of the unique electronic artists of his time, Andy Duguid is a name recognized globally. His sound is his brand, and his brand is why he is unique. He is different; he is the master of his trade, he is Andy Duguid.

Alongside his productions, his DJing has taken him to every corner of the world, through Europe, Africa, and Asia and onwards to the United States. He graced the decks in cities from Los Angeles to Miami, where he joined Andy Moor for his WMC 2010 event, Andy Moor and Friends.
